Local lighting retailer James Kok inherited his family business six years ago. Quite cushy you may think? But since then he has taken it from strength to strength, establishing his own identity while making it one of the leading independent retailers in the country. We pick his business brain….
What inspired you to run your own business? “My parents have been my inspiration. It was their drive and passion that encouraged me to take on the challenge of developing Andrew Kok Lighting.”
What relevant training/experience did you have? “After studying Business at University I spent just over a year working in two different sales environments before moving into the family business six years ago.”
What has been crucial to your success? “The key to the success of Andrew Kok Lighting is its staff, its range of exclusive products, and the fact that our customers are proud to proclaim they have bought their lights from us.”
What part has Lancashire played in your career? “Lancashire has been pivotal in the success of the company. The vast majority of our customers are Lancastrians although we do get a lot of customers from further afield.”
What makes a successful business? “Hard work, dedication and staff with a core belief in the product.”
What do you know now that you wish you’d known when you started out? “I know to expect the unexpected as every day is unique. I also know to appreciated just how much hard work is needed in order to maintain our business as one of the leading independent retailers in the country.”
What has been the high point of your career so far? “Establishing my own identity on the business – it was a result of my entering the business that the shop was expanded to incorporate a modern section. I have also enjoyed traveling to Germany and Spain to find exclusive ranges for us to import.”
And the low point? “Watching the demise of British manufacturers and European suppliers driven out of business by the effects of countries such as China entering the market.”
What personal qualities do you think you need to launch your own business? “Drive, enthusiasm, tenacity, a belief in your idea/product. Surrounding yourself with good staff.”
What are the advantages of owning your own business? “Ability to determine which direction your business takes.”
And the disadvantages? “Long hours and the fact that the business always takes priority.”
What achievements would you still like to fulfil? “To hand over the business in a stronger position than when I entered it.”
What are your top tips for budding entrepreneurs? “Draw up a sound business plan and make use of any contacts you have. Never give up on your dream; have the confidence to listen to others but act out your own beliefs.”
